Making Your Own Golf Clubs

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

For the amateur golfer, making your own set of golf clubs or just that one special club can be a lot of fun, and it could help your game.

You may ask why you would ever want to build your own golf clubs.Well, the big reason is that when you buy clubs off the shelf, you are stuck with the sizes and fits that are in stock - limited only. There may be one size for men, another for the women and another for the children who need junior golf clubs. For someone with a 6′ 2″ height, buying off the rack can cause one’s golf game to suffer and cause annoying back aches because the clubs that was picked were too short. By learning to make your own golf clubs you can help your body and save some cash at the same time.

You really don’t need much to make your own golf clubs. You just need a head, shaft, grip and some other materials to hold it all together.  Searching the internet will give you many options to buy your components to make clubs that match your game.

Club heads — iron and wood heads are available anywhere. One can buy club heads that resemble popular brands or designs unique to the manufacturer you buy them from. Different vendor offers their own line of clubs.

Shafts - you can buy the same shafts that most of these branded golf club companies use.

Grips - there are a variety of sizes and types of grips. You can find them in different prices and even get the same ones the pros use..

Ferules — That’s the little plastic piece that goes on the end of the shaft above the club head you’ll find on some clubs. These are purely decorative except on graphite shafts where they are necessary to absorb some of the stresses where the shaft joins the club head.

The beauty of finding the components to make your club is the fact that you can mix and match components to match your game.

Some of the tools needed are:

Grip tape – two sided tape is needed

Grip tape solvent – very cheap and you can recycle the excess

Epoxy – you will needs an epoxy with a drying time of 2-3 hours

Pipe cutter for cutting steel shafts, a plumbing cutter will work fine

For graphite shaft use a hack saw

Grip cutting knife – one with a hooked blade works nicely

Sandpaper for roughing up shaft tips to epoxy them

Shaft clamp – a thick piece of rubber in a vise works well

Making a golf club consists of measuring and cutting the shaft to length, abrading the tip to make sure the bond to the head is as good as possible. You then push the ferrule over the thin end of the shaft and glue the head to the shaft with epoxy. Waiting for the epoxy to dry is the worst part of the job… You want to take your new golf club to the course and try it out. Once the epoxy has settled, you wrap the butt end of the shaft with grip tape (double-sided sticky tape), get it wet using one of a wide range of solvents, slide the grip over it and let dry. Now you clean your new golf club, polish the ferrule and end up with something better then you can buy at a store.

So get to your computer, surf the net and find great websites to get your components. In no time, you will be able to create your own golf clubs. So have fun.

Those who play golf know it’s addictive. Building your own club can be addicting as well.

What Are The Types Of Gold Club?

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Golf started as early as 1297 in Netherlands. The players employ a stick and a leather ball to play in that period.  As time goes by different golf clubs emerged.  Different sizes and different shapes of club head.  If you are serious, you want to improve your golf game, knowing the right golf club is the best way to start.

Let me help you understand golf by understanding what golf club you need and how you can develop your swing with the use of your golf club.

I am telling you this early that you do not need to pay thousands of dollars for a golf club.  Well, not until you are sure that your thousand-dollar golf club is what fits you.

How do you ensure in which golf club you fit?  Let us discuss first the characteristics of golf clubs before you decide which golf club you need.

What are the types of gold club?

Putter
Iron
Wood
Wedge
Driver

Putter

The putter’s job is merely to send the ball rolling.  You do not need to employ as much strength here.  Simple hit the ball to have it roll perpendicular to the hole.A putter simply rolls the ball at a short distance.

Iron

The weight is an issue here, although the iron has the same function as the wood with respect to reach but because of the different characteristics of players, the iron has more diversity of use as compared to the wood. The iron brings the ball as far as the wood but the iron similarly has the function of arcing the plight of the ball.

Wood

As mentioned the function of the wood is to bring the ball as far as possible.  Thus, the club head of the wood is the biggest.  Its main function is to bring the ball far, but the swing or the stroke may determine the direction of the ball.

Wedge

Mostly wedges are made of iron; one of its major functions is to play the ball in water or sand hazard.  Again, there are many shapes of the wedge head; this is because each head may have a different function than the other.

Driver

The driver is mostly made of wood; the popular use of the driver is on the tee.  You may find it difficult to use the driver on the tee but you may practice your swing and later on, you will be comfortable.

Of course, because different players have their different comfortable clubs, you may therefore need to recognize which one is yours and practice that particular club as much as you can.

The golf club may help you improve your game.  It is therefore important that you are comfortable with your golf club and thus practice as much as you can.  This is the only way to improve your game and your enjoyment in this strategic game.

Finally, yes, the choice of club is important but if you do not practice your swing on and off the green, it may be hard for you to lower your score and improve your handicap.

This game is not physically draining but it is strategic, it may help therefore that you find a mentor and your mentor will be able to guide you well into playing this game.
